Fair Oaks Historic

Description:

The historic town of what is known as Old Town Fair Oaks was set up in 1844 as part of the Rancho San Juan Mexican Land Grant; primarily known for it's fruit, almond and olive orchards. A group of prominent businessmen from Chicago set out to colonize it. They lobbied to have the Old Fair Oaks Bridge built in 1901 and rebuilt in 1909 after it's collapse. A Southern Pacific railway line was put in on the south side to bring in settlers and sell produce to Sacramento. This bridge is now a national historic site and was featured in the 1980 film, "The Stuntman". Walk through this historic and quaint town known for its roaming chickens, starting at Plaza and Village parks.

The 10K will take you through residential areas and down to the American River Parkway. You will cross the American River on the Jim Jones Pedestrian Bridge and circle back to Fair Oaks via the Old Fair Oaks Bridge. The 5K stays in Old Town and takes you over the old bridge across the American River and back. This is a hilly area that will thoroughly stretch your calves, but it is quite picturesque. Join in the Chicken Festival on the third Saturday in September or the Fair Oaks Dog Walk on the 1st Saturday in October. The Fair Oaks festival the 1st week in May features a family friendly parade and events.
